PAM Kuching Bus Stop Competition 2021
RE : KBS (Kuching Bus Stop), where 'RE' means RE-invent, RE-shape, and RE-imagine the future bus stop. This project discussed how the daily experience of commuters can be enhanced by redesigning the bus stop as a portal with meaningful activities, joy, and daily needs. As the public bus is getting less attractive due to several factors, such as safety, reliability (punctuality), and services, RE-designing a bus stop that helps to improve customer satisfaction and accessible services is crucial to promote public bus as an attractive mode of transport. Thus, the idea of this project is to transform the conventional bus stop into a more welcoming environment providing the public with a well-considerate and more secure design where it encourages them to use public transport more often. To design a bus stop for the local community in Kuching, a city with rich ethnic culture and history, the proposal was designed in a way it resembles the traditional houses from the local villages. To show the local identity of the city, the decorative side panels and elevated stilts were implemented as part of the bus stop design. The entire bus stop was elevated to prevent rainwater and debris accumulate inside the shelter. Furthermore, as the bus stop needs to be future-proof to adapt to the rapid development world, modular systems designs were incorporated to allow the design to be portable. With this system, modular blocks can be easily manufactured, assembled, dismantle and reuse where they could be built in different site conditions and enhance the circular economy in terms of the construction. With all the design strategies, the proposed bus stop design act as the catalyst, enriching the experience in Kuching city to enhance the lifestyle of the commuters meanwhile promote Kuching as a sustainable city.
