YAC Culture Stations International Competition 2021

Our proposal intends to adapt, connect and enlighten Elini off its status as a remote destination to an island of the 21st century. The Next Elini, is a proposition inspired by the potentials of Elini’s abandoned railway stations for a cultural, social and environmental agenda. The need to examine the city from a Next perception is informed by a degradation of population growth, inspiring us to reject conventional ways of urbanization in island towns. The potentials of Elini is promising with the events unfolding, climate change and a global pandemic anchoring the livelihood of many, the possibilities of expansion and urbanisation remotely will become a viable option. Our design proposal looks at The Next Elini as the Next Enlightenment, the potentials of a safely tucked away island in addressing our living conditions in a newfound reality. With this ideology in place, we explore the three anchoring themes which will inform our design decision and outcome.

The Next Elini will provide a framework of modern living induced with Sardinia's heritage and culture. Scenes of abandonment will transition into renewed landmarks for habitation and inspiration. The city will be enlightened from its agricultural pride into a modern machine for living. Infused by adaptable programs scattered throughout Elini, the township and cityscape of Elini can transition into a cultural centre for art and craft to prosper. This newfound form of connection will stem Elini as an island of the 21st century, a town of work and leisure that breathes Sardinia’s finesse; a locally ingrained society catered for a modern, global community.

"enlightenment"

Just as the industrial revolution conceived the notion of transport in the form of steam engines and pre-stressed concrete sleepers, the essence of movement is yet again questioned and challenged in the 21st century. The notion of movement, a plausible commodity which has returned to a state of hedonism, challenges the position of Elini as more than just a remote pitstop. With the assistance of technological advancement, we intend to uncover Elini’s potential as a city of the future, through and by design.

"adaptation"

To rectify Elini’s credentials as a city of the future, the essence of adaptation needs to be quintessential, reflected through the design process off the railway station and its surrounding typologies.  We believe in respecting the presence of existing culture and heritage, in which design interventions provide the opportunity for the old to synergize with the new. Remnants of the old railway station are not just retained but highlighted through careful tectonics and respectful materiality. The functionality of these abandoned stations will expand with thoughtful spatial planning and coordinated geometry, providing a design idea that is embedded in the characters of Elini.

"connection"

The essence of travel through locomotive devices can be traced back to the most primitive human need of physical contact, a tool for survival that has been widely conceived in the 21st century. Elini’s geographical construct has allowed the exploration of the nicest corners of the island, allowing the opportunity to address these nodal points as social platforms to bridge cultures and societies. The experience of locomotives is hence extrapolated to address the design opportunities around the island, providing genuine connection that will preserve yet exemplify Elini’s potentials as a city of the 21st century.
